The Village @ Indian Rock Lake and another subdivision have depended on the same bridge for the last 50 years with one way in and out. Now the bridge is facing collapse. Like lots of things, the can gets kicked down the road and nothing is done.
Suddenly, the county and state became aware that our bridge is about to fail and after giving it a thorough review, they posted “10 ton limit” signs. It’s being treated as a joke.
The Village of at least 30 households is facing a complete loss of access to the outside world if the bridge gives way, and this problem is being pushed with new construction in the upper subdivision. We’ve been promised that only half-loads would be ferried across the bridge, but we’ve only seen full loads of gravel weighing nine times the capacity of the bridge.
Other heavy equipment is coming across the bridge that weighs more than 10 tons empty. We even have misdirected long trailers behind heavy duty pickups being pulled through the village on PRIVATE ROADS that cannot handle such long trailers and are damaging these roads as they drag trailers through ditches and culverts. It’s a vexing situation that includes other traffic that passes through the village to the horse ranch nearby.
The Board of Directors has sent legal letters to the county and to TDOT. The county has been stonewalling and overwhelmed by demands. But it turns out, that with a little persistence and the assistance of our representative Cameron Sexton, our community has been able to turn a corner, and surveyors started working on a new bridge system on October 21, 2024. It’s a start.
Don’t forget, these vehicles go two ways, and these big trucks are already over the limit themselves…
